Just the other day, I had a client express her concern about reading a nutrition fact label. She was frustrated because she polished off a package of chips thinking it was only 140 calories, just to find out the package really contained 4 servings, instead of 1. Can you relate?
Reading a nutrition fact label can be very frustrating and misleading at times. We have grown accustomed to seeing these labels for over 20 years and never once seen any significant changes made to them. It can be difficult to estimate servings and calories and can even feel like these “useful labels” are more trouble than they are worth.
I am happy to tell you, that on February 27th, the Food and Drug Admiration (FDA) announced that a redesign is in the works. Changes may include visual design as well as informative. The FDA has proposed seven changes they feel will help consumers make more informed choices when selecting a pre-packaged item. Check out the FDA link for a complete list of proposed changes.
San Antonio Express-News columnist, Richard Marini, interviewed our very own Samantha Lopez regarding this new hot topic. Take a look at his article, Building a Better Nutrition Facts Label, to find out what she thinks.
We would love to hear your suggestions for the new nutrition facts label!
