By now you have heard all the benefits of eating a healthy diet- weight management, increased energy, disease prevention, etc. For these reasons, many of us make a valiant effort every day to make healthier food choices. However, most of us don’t realize that proper sleep is just as important as a healthy diet. As a matter of fact, our food and sleep patterns are tied very closely together.
Did you know that poor sleep can negatively affect your appetite and metabolism in a huge way? Recent studies show that people who do not get enough sleep are more likely to have larger appetites, worse cravings, and slower metabolisms, leading to weight gain. Here are 2 quick ways to improve your healthy and help you sleep better tonight!
Limit Caffeine
Do you feel like you cannot function in the morning without a cup of coffee? You are not alone; actually more than half of Americans report that they need at least 1 cup of coffee per day. We use caffeine to help us power through the day and (sometimes) even well into the night if the need is dire. On the flip side, your daily dose of caffeine may be preventing you from getting a good night’s sleep, leaving you red-eyed and weary the following morning. It’s a vicious cycle that keeps getting repeated over and over again. So, how can we break out of this cycle?
Power up with good nutrition! Instead of grabbing a caffeinated beverage in the afternoon, try reaching for a balanced snack, such as: Greek yogurt, apple with peanut butter, or a healthy homemade trail mix.
Eat for Sleep
Start by eating on a consistent schedule. This is a great way to boost your metabolism and increase your productivity during the day. Not to mention, eating regularly can help you avoid the morning munchies and the afternoon lull.
Second, eat a diet rich in lean protein, healthy fats, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables. Bottom line: if you eat better, you’ll sleep better.
